The arts are among the greatest influences of any culture. Where there is man, there is culture and there is creativity and art. Without a doubt, man’s desire to create is a natural response of being created in the image of God-the Creator. In the beginning God gave the mandate to Adam and Eve to subdue the earth as creative stewards, and indeed, since that time, whether for better or worse, man has designed his dwellings, cities and nations with creative pursuits. A blank canvas, an empty silence … stillness. A holy moment, without movement, only light. Quiet. Waiting. Things fall away; what is left? Me, stripped me. Him, Holy God. In our desire to be with Him in the power of this kind of moment, there is a temptation to determine that this is the authentic avenue to our God; therefore, one must shun all else. The stripping we have perceived as cleansing, holy, wonderful – in our longing to continue in this place, we –denominations, churches, individuals -- long to translate that into our daily life, and so turn to our surroundings and began stripping it away. The danger is losing, limiting, even denying the sighting of Him and of ourselves in countless other ways. While there is no denying that there are offensive ways within the Arts today, we cannot afford to distance ourselves, nor limit our own discovery of Him and of ourselves in these areas. The Canvas does not stay blank, the silence will be filled. We have come to a season where we are to again examine, to again understand the power of color on a page, the music in the words, the sounds of the earth, the images formed… What is mankind asking? What questions are important to them? And what will be the answer of the Holy God? And how, as artists, will we participate in that answer? How is the Lord in motion on the earth, and how has He used the journey of artists in the past to carry out His grace, mercy and love in the nations? Date: 2007-05-25 |

There are times in the Church’s history when, in seeking after this kind of moment, all else is thrown out. Nothing can stand in that space. It is essential to be in this place to gain perspective. We must have it. Once the space is cleared, the sounds and movement are still – and we have seen Him with our own eyes… Peace.
